Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this clinical module, the student should be able to demonstrate the development of competence in the following domains of competence (Level 2: Close supervision):

● Work in partnership with the woman and her family and establish a relationship of trust and confidentiality
● Holistic approaches to care and integration of knowledge in a specialist or midwifery care setting.
● Participate with the midwife in assessing, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the provision of safe and evidence-based care for a caseload of women and their babies and be able to provide a rationale for this.
● Communicate and collaborate with women, women’s families and with the multidisciplinary healthcare team
● Work within the scope of practice of a second-year midwifery student and recognise own level of knowledge and professional behaviours.

Indicative Module Content:

The areas that may be linked to this module include Antenatal (and may include outpatient clinics, midwifery-led clinics, fetal assessment unit, day ward, antenatal wards and antenatal/parenthood education), Intranatal or Postnatal areas. The specialist areas that may be linked to this module include Neonatal, Gynaecology, Mental Health, Theatre and Recovery, and Primary Healthcare areas (NMBI, 2016).

The student will normally undertake 16 weeks of supernumerary clinical placement during Stage 2 of the programme. The placement is assessed by clinical preceptors using a clinical assessment workbook and is assessed on a pass/fail basis. 100% attendance is required in clinical placement.
Other - The student must maintain a record of their clinical experiences (every week) as outlined by EU Directive 2005/36/EC and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (2016)= NMCAT
The student will also participate in protected reflective time of a minimum of one hour per week

Have attempted all core midwifery and shared modules in Stage 2, Trimester 1.

All clinical placement modules must be passed and all of the clinical time completed for the preceding stage before the student can undertake this clinical module. All clinical placement modules must be passed and all of the clinical time completed for the CURRENT STAGE before the student can progress to the next stage of the programme.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback on clinical performance during the placement will be given to the student by the Preceptor, Co-preceptor (if allocated), Clinical Midwife Manager and Clinical Placement Coordinator throughout the placement and at the initial, intermediate and final interview.
