NMHS20790 Nurs Child Acute Setting

This module aims to introduce students to the theory underpinning the care of the child experiencing altered health and function in relation to the respiratory, cardiovascular and genito-urinary systems within a framework of child and family centred care. This module is presented in three units as follows; Unit 1 Care of the child with altered breathing, Unit 2 Care of the child with altered circulation and Unit 3 Care of the child with altered genito-urinary function.
Each unit familiarises the student with the epidemiological and pathophysiological basis of altered function in these areas. The module uses a case study approach to address the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing care needs for the child and family in relation to common conditions within each area. Additional aspects of care in relation to diagnosis, treatment and the role of the multi-disciplinary team are also discussed. Each unit introduces the student to educational, rehabilitative and health promotional aspects of child and family centred care in the acute and community care setting to achieve and maintain respiratory, cardiovascular and genito-urinary health.
100% attendance at the clinical skills workshops for this module is recommended.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe the unique anatomical and physiological characteristics in relation to breathing, circulation and genito-urinary function in children.
2. Explain the epidemiology and pathophysiology for altered breathing, circulation and genito-urinary function.
3. Using a case study and a systematic approach to nursing care, construct a nursing assessment to facilitate the identification of actual/potential problems for the child/family relevant to conditions within the module.
4. Create a nursing care plan encompassing nursing goals, interventions and appropriate principles of nursing care relevant to particular conditions within the module.
5. Discuss the relevant diagnostic, therapeutic and multidisciplinary aspects of care for the child and family relevant to the conditions addressed within the module.
6. Critically discuss the information, education, rehabilitative and support needs of the child and family, together with the services available or required within the hospital and the community.
