Indicative Module Description:

This core module will introduce students to the principles of patient safety, medication management and microbiology.

The concept of patient safety will be explored with particular reference to national and international reports and recommendations on patient safety issues. Areas of study within patient safety include communication, competence, human factors, safety culture and organisational risk and accountability. The student will also have the opportunity to explore national and international issues and guidelines in relation to infection control and prevention.

Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and application of the key principles of medication management and administration including accurate medication calculations. The principles of the National Early Warning System (NEWS) & the National Sepsis Programme will be explored and applied to practice.

The principles of microbiology and the associated pathological response will be explored and applied to clinical nursing and midwifery practice. Areas of study within microbiology include the study of bacteria and viruses with particular attention given to infectious diseases within the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and gastrointestinal systems.

The module is part of the essential requirements for professional registration and the credit load of the module reflects the student effort hours required to achieve the learning outcomes. The expectation is that each student will engage with all learning & reading materials assigned and attend and actively engage in all online, face to face and simulation sessions.
The use of generative artificial intelligence or other machine learning technology is not permitted in the assessments.
