This core module will introduce students to the principles of patient safety, microbiology and infection and prevention control, national early warning system, sepsis and medication management.

The concept of patient safety will be explored with particular reference to national and international reports and recommendations on patient safety issues. Areas of study within patient safety include communication, competence, human factors, safety culture and organisational risk and accountability. The student will also have the opportunity to explore national and international issues and guidelines in relation to infection control and prevention.

Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and application of the key principles of medication management and administration including accurate medication calculations. The principles of the National Early Warning System (NEWS) will be explored and applied to practice.

The principles of microbiology and the associated pathological response will be explored and applied to clinical nursing and midwifery practice. Areas of study within microbiology include the study of bacteria and viruses with particular attention given to infectious diseases within the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and gastrointestinal systems.

The module is part of the essential requirements for professional registration and the credit load of the module reflects the student effort hours required to achieve the learning outcomes. The expectation is that each student will engage with all learning & reading materials assigned and attend and actively engage in all online, face to face and simulation sessions.

Indicative Learning Outcomes: On completion the candidate will be able to:

• Examine and explain patient safety issues and the structures, processes and guidelines used in the management of patient safety.
• Examine the principles of medication management and complete accurate drug calculations.
• Identify and describe microbiological organisms that cause disease and examine the variety of infectious diseases associated with the body systems.
• Discuss national and international guidelines in relation to infection prevention & control.
• Understand sepsis and the use of the National Early Warning System as an intervention to escalate patient care management

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Two types of feedback will be given on the written assignment. Group feedback will be given to students during the trimester. Using a rubric, individual feedback will also be given with the release of the provisional grade.
