Indicative Module Description:
This core module will introduce the student to the principles of patient safety, microbiology and infection control and prevention, sepsis and Early Warning Score. The concept of patient safety will be explored with particular reference to national and international reports and recommendations on patient safety issues. Principles of Early Warning Score will be explored and applied to practice. The principles of microbiology and the associated pathological response will be explored and applied to clinical nursing and midwifery practice. Areas of study within microbiology include the study of bacteria and viruses with particular attention given to infectious diseases within the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and gastrointestinal systems. The student will also have the opportunity to explore national and international issues and guidelines in relation to infection control and prevention and explain drug management and drug administration

Indicative Learning Outcomes: On completion the candidate will be able to:

• Examine and explain patient safety issues and the structures, processes and guidelines used in the management of patient
safety.
• Identify and describe microbiological organisms that cause disease and examine the variety of infectious diseases
associated with the body systems.
• Discuss national and international guidelines in relation to infection prevention & control
• Understand sepsis and the use of the Early Warning Score as an intervention to escalate patient care management
• Outline the principles of medication management and complete accurate drug calculations
