On completion of this clinical module students should be able to:
1. Discuss the role and philosophy of midwifery and its application to practice across the spectrum of midwifery
care (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal).
2. Participate with the midwife in provision of midwifery care (under direct supervision of a registered midwife) to women in pregnancy, labour & birth, and to mothers and babies in the postnatal period
3. Incorporate professional standards of clinical practice and professional conduct.
4. Discuss basic concepts involved in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of midwifery practice.
5. Through reflection demonstrate a cognisance of their own abilities and limitations working under supervision of preceptors to address areas for improvement.
6. Begin to work as a member of the Multidisciplinary team demonstrating an awareness of the scope of midwifery and student midwife practice.
7. Begin to understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to organise, prioritise and co-ordinate midwifery care.
8. Demonstrate the ability to communicate appropriately, with women and their families, preceptor and other members of the multidisciplinary team including verbal, nonverbal, and writing skills.
9. Begin to demonstrate the midwifery knowledge attitude and skills appropriate to year one of the programme.
The student will normally undertake 11 weeks of supernumerary clinical placement across the core areas of antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care during Stage 1 of the programme. The placement is assessed by clinical preceptors using a clinical assessment workbook and is assessed on a pass/fail basis. 100% attendance is required in clinical placement.
Other - The student must maintain a record of their clinical experiences (every week) as outlined by EU Directive 2005/36/EC and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (2016)= NMCAT
The student will also participate in protected reflective time of a minimum of one hour per week.

Have attempted all core midwifery and shared modules in Stage 1, Trimester 1.
All clinical placement modules must be passed and all of the clinical time completed for the CURRENT STAGE before the student can progress to the next stage of the programme.

Feedback on clinical performance during the placement will be given to the student by the Preceptor, Co-preceptor (if allocated), Clinical Midwife Manager and Clinical Placement Coordinator.
