MUS41160 Ireland & the Musical Artwork

This six-week course will examine approaches to the concept of the musical work in relation to Irish cultural history. In particular, the musical work will be conceptualized as a mediating factor between 'music as practice' and 'music as art' in specific relation to art music and traditional music as these have developed in Ireland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

* An understanding of the musical artwork as a mediating concept between traditional and art music in Ireland
* An ability to understand how musical works can 'define Ireland musically'
* An opportunity to examine current research in relation to both of these outcomes.
