MUS31390 The Mass as Musical Genre, 1700-1800

This course examines the development of musical settings of the ordinary of the mass between 1700 and c.1800. Approaches to the mass as a musical genre during this period will be considered through an examination of the mass settings of Johann Joseph Fux (1660-1741), Antonio Caldara (1670-1736), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). This is a score-based course, and students will be provided with materials from week to week as the module progresses.

Learning Outcomes:

* An understanding of the mass ordinary as a musical genre in the long eighteenth century
* An understanding of the mass as a pathway to the development of the musical artwork
* A familiarity with the structural, expressive and aesthetic components of the mass as a musical genre during the High Baroque and Classical periods.
