This is a module in mathematical problem-solving. Its primary purpose is to provide an opportunity for final-year undergraduates in BSc Social Sciences to experience something of what is involved in doing mathematical research, and to explore their own capabilities individually and in groups on mathematical problems and ideas which are new to them. The goal of mathematical research, of course, is to discover new, interesting and relevant results and to advance the frontiers of mathematical knowledge. The core of this activity, however, is solving particular problems and explaining new and unexpected mathematical patterns or phenomena. For this reason the module focuses on solving non-routine problems in mathematics and in writing up/ presenting these solutions.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, the student is expected to develop the mathematical skill of
problem-solving and improve his/her writing/presentational/communication skills.

Indicative Module Content:

The topics/problems that will be covered will be tailored to the interests, abilities and requirements of the students.

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

This is a module in mathematical problem-solving. There are no specific learning requirements. However, the student should be familiar with the standard mathematical terminology and notions (numbers, sets, functions etc.).
