MST00050 Mathematics: An introduction

This is an introductory module that is intended to help incoming students understand and master basic topics that are necessary for successful engagement with future modules in their chosen field of study. Topics include: fractions, exponents, logs, manipulating and simplifying algebraic expressions, linear, quadratic and simultaneous equations, straight line and quadratic graphs and functions, matrix algebra, differentiation, including the power, sum, multiple, product and quotient rules, and integration, including the power, sum and multiple rules and finding areas.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to: carry out arithmetic computations; simplify algebraic expressions; solve linear, quadratic and simultaneous equations; sketch straight line and quadratic graphs; perform matrix calculations. differentiate rational, trigonometric and logarithmic functions, and integrate polynomials.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered via online lectures and tutorials, in addition to online quizzes. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Students who wish to pursue MST10010 and who achieved less than a H4 in Leaving Certificate Mathematics (or equivalent) must take MST00050. Students can take MST00050 and MST10010 concurrently.

Learning Exclusions:

Only students who achieved less than H4 in Leaving Certificate Mathematics (or equivalent) and wish to enrol to MST10010 can take this module. All other students are excluded. Permission should be sought directly from the module coordinator if you feel there is a reason why you should take the module but are not one of the students described above.

Additional Information:
Students who take MST00050 must have achieved less than a H4 in Leaving Certificate Mathematics (or equivalent) and be enrolled to MST10010.
