MIS10050 Digital Technologies in Business

Information systems are an integral part of all business activities and careers. This course is designed to introduce students to contemporary information systems and demonstrate how these systems are used throughout global organisations. The module introduces a range of technologies used in business, from Enterprise Resource Planning systems to Augmented Reality solutions. Students will also research emerging technologies by reading about leading organisations in the field.

The course is structured in two halves:

1. Digital technologies used in business: spreadsheet modelling, technology outlook and enterprise systems. We undertake hands-on activities to gather and model business data from live sources - qualitative and quantitative information is obtained using the Financial Times academic subscription. We will then learn about integrated business processes by user training in the leading enterprise system suite, SAP.

2. Immersive technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) allow users to move from real to virtual experience offering new ways of media interaction and consumption. The “AR in Business” component of MIS10050 focusses on identifying and designing feasible AR applications helping organisations to gain and sustain competitive advantage. Students follow the generic business application development life cycle to identify, propose, and implement an AR prototype for a selected organisation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to :
Understand the concept of information and describe how and why information systems are used today, including the technological, human resources, and organisational components of information systems.
Understand how businesses are using information systems for competitive advantage and because of competitive necessity.
Be aware of emerging technologies that enable new forms of communication, collaboration, and partnering, including providing stronger relationships with customers and suppliers.
Develop an understanding of current and emerging immersive technologies with particular focus on Augmented Reality.
Design and implement an AR prototype for a selected organisation

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is based largely on practical work, building skills using current business technology tools.
Also, students will research technology trends and events using readings assigned, mainly from UCD's Financial Times online subscription.
Students will work in groups to develop an Augmented Reality business application.
Assessment is based on in-class activities and assigned reports.
