This module is intended to provide an understanding of host pathogen interactions and the transition of commensal microorganisms to a pathogenic state in host infections. The topics covered will include: Staphylococci, Streptococci and Enterococci: mucosal colonisation, sepsis and other bloodstream infections and immune evasion. C. difficile: Colonisation, infections and post-antibiotic effects and the role of the gut microbiome. Campylobacter, Helicobacter and salmonella: gut colonisation and infections.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course the student will be able to:
1. Understand commensal microorganisms and how they transition to a pathogenic state in infections
2. Have a comprehensive knowledge of the role of microbiota in colonisation and infection
3. Be able to critically evaluate the impact of antibiotic treatment on the prevention and promotion of infections
