This module is designed to expose the students to the tools for analysing and improving the quality performance of various systems such as business, production, and service systems. Quality and process improvement occurs most effectively on a project-by-project basis. Within this module, The six-sigma DMAIC framework, an acronym for define, measure, analyse, improve, and control is described as a structured five-step problem-solving procedure that can be used to successfully complete quality-related projects by proceeding through and implementing solutions that are designed to solve root causes of quality and process problems in various types of systems, e.g. business, production processes, and services.

Within this module, various types of related topics, tools and techniques for analysing current systems and continuously improving their quality performance will be presented. These tools will be covered within the three overarching topics (1) multi-attribute decision analytics, (2) statistical process control, and (3) design of experiments.

Learning Outcomes:

On the competition of this module, the students should be able to:

(1) Recognise the fundamental aspects of quality control, lean and six-sigma.
(2) Use multi-attribute decision modeling tools and methods to make design and improvement decisions.
(3) Apply statistical process control techniques to determine process behaviours.
(4) Design engineering experiments and perform statistical analysis on the data obtained thereby improving quality.
(5) Demonstrate a high level of competency in applying the covered tools to a variety of real-world related engineering design and business problems and projects.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module utilized some of the key teaching and learning approaches used in higher education such as:
(1) Active/task-based learning; which is an approach where the planning of learning materials and teaching sessions are based around doing a task.

(2) Peer and group work: which is a form of voluntary association of members benefiting from cooperative learning, that enhances the total output of the activity than when done individually.

(3) Lectures: face-to-face and online presentations and discussions with module lecturer.

(4) lab and tutorials: various types of related problems will be covered during these sessions.

(5) Case/Problem-based learning; which is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving a related project/problem.

(6) Student presentations: This requires students to present the outcomes of their projects individually or in a group.
