The primary aim is to provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired during the ME coursework to an in-depth exploration of an engineering topic that is of particular interest to them. The student will select and pursue an engineering research topic (which may also include business aspects or elements). The student will be required to independently plan and manage their research project under the guidance of the academic supervisor. The involvement of the organisation where the student carried out their work placement or of any other organisation is also possible. The student is expected to carry out a literature and state-of-the-art review, a research design document, a project plan, and a final report/thesis.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, the student will display mastery, integration and application of business principles in an engineering context, through being able to:
(a) Understand and employ standard research methods.
(b) Describe the engineering and business principles that underpin the research.
(c) Conduct a literature review
(d) Identify specific research objectives which integrate aspects of the technical and business elements of the programme
(e) Formulate a research design to address the project objectives and develop a project plan
(f) Implement the project plan
(g) Employ data science and analytics techniques, analyse results, discuss critically and draw appropriate conclusions
(h) Evaluate implications for both theory and practice of the research results
(i) Present the research project and results to both technical and business audiences through a written report/thesis and oral presentation
(j) Understand the importance of the ethical usage of technology and data
