MEEN41060 MEM Applied Research Project

Academic Year 2021/2022

This is an optional module for students on the Master of Engineering Management programme. It is designed for students based in industry and who have at least five years professional engineering experience.
This applied research project module aims to provide the students with an opportunity to integrate "theory and practice" through their research of a real-life engineering management issue as encountered by organisations in Ireland and abroad. The module will give the student an array of engineering management skills such as the ability to apply theory to practice, to analyse data, critically evaluate theory and practice in an engineering management context, and to manage an applied research project.

Learning Outcomes:

The learning objectives are to use the knowledge from the Master of Engineering Management programme to investigate and solve an issue for a company. Students will use synthesis, analysis and critical thinking skills to develop the solutions for the company. They will use their writing and presentation skills to communicate their work and solution to the company. On completing this module, students will be expected to:
1. Identify a research question based on the student's observations of a real-world engineering management situation.
2. Synthesise prior academic and practitioner literature related to the research question.
3. Choose an appropriate methodology to structure the analysis of the research problem, which will enable answers to the research question to be developed.
4. Combine different knowledge streams from the Master of Engineering Management programme to solve the research problem identified and to answer the research question.
5. Justify and defend the proposed recommendations to address the research problem.
6. Construct a written report and oral argument which describes the process employed from research problem identification to recommendations.
