MEEN41020 Design & Innovation

Academic Year 2023/2024

This is an intensive module delivered over a period of four weeks in trimester three (mid May to mid June) which focuses on the design and innovation lifecycle. The aim of this module is to help MEngSc in Engineering Management students to develop their ability for independent creative thinking and innovation and to identify and develop the skill-sets they would require to take a product from concept stage through to full market launch. Working in teams, students will be provided with an industry requirement for new product (or can come up with an example from their own experience) and will be required to apply the topics from the module to translate this requirement first to a product concept and thereafter to a commercial product. Topics covered will include creative thinking, concept generation, concept selection, product architecture, innovation management & economics and intellectual property. Students will be expected to complete group work outside the classroom, whilst inside the classroom progress will be discussed in addition to a number of case studies which draw upon real world examples.
