MEEN3004W Materials 2

Academic Year 2022/2023

Materials 2 is an intermediate-level material module that will cover basic principles of the phase diagram of metals, microstructure development and mechanical properties, thermal processing of metal alloys, non-ferrous alloys, polymer/composite materials, and broad content of corrosion and degradation of materials. This module will also cover significant metal degradation processes and corrosion. Importantly, the material selection and design consideration will be discussed.

Two labs on materials microstructure characterization and material selection will be carried out. The labs are carried out with reference to current School Health and Safety protocols. Students should follow these during all laboratory activities. Further information is available at https://intranet.ucd.ie/smme/index.html and within the Brightspace resources for this module.

The EDI principle will be applied in teaching & learning for a variety of activities including data sharing, lecture slides preparation, teamwork and assessment. The group assignment will be made available to teams with options of self-enrolment and automatic allocation. Groups are free to choose their assignment topic under defined guidelines. Team communication will be guided via Brightspace and in-person discussion.
