Curricular information is subject to change.

The design, prototyping and testing of solutions to an identified customer need is a critical aspect of mechanical engineering practice. This module will combine formal delivery of core concepts of the design process, engineering practice and management, with practical design, build and test of a developed solution. The lecture based content will focus on the areas of design methodologies, project management and presentation skills. The laboratory based activities will use examples from across mechanical engineering as platforms for the team based project. Each team will design, prototype and test their preferred solution.

All laboratories are carried out with reference to current School Health and Safety protocols. Students should follow these during all laboratory activities. Further information is available at https://intranet.ucd.ie/smme/index.html and within the Brightspace resources for this module.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Apply established design methodologies to the development of new or modified products, from the establishment of the design specification to the final evaluation stages.
2. Create and select optimum design solutions.
3. Plan and coordinate engineering project activities to deliver the required output within a specified timescale.
4. Design an overall system, including specific detail components, to solve a particular product need, including both technical and non-technical issues of the design brief.
5. Work collaboratively in teams.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of an engineer in the design process including due consideration to potential health and safety issues and environmental factors.
7. Demonstrate effective verbal and written presentation and communication skills.

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
• Feedback individually to students, post-assessment
• Online automated feedback
• Peer review activities

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Each week student teams meet with their project mentors, who provide feedback on recent work and advice for the week ahead. An online feedback system, Feedback fruits will be used to perform peer evluations. At the end of the semester, student teams receive individual feedback on their projects.
