Curricular information is subject to change.

An introduction to the structure, properties, and performance of engineering materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and advanced materials like composites and foams.

Content of lectures will include:
• Introduction to materials science and engineering
• Atomic and crystal structures
• Development of microstructure
• Material properties
• Plasticity and strength
• Metal solidification
• The iron-carbon alloy system
• Ironmaking and steelmaking
• The structure and performance of ceramics
• The structure and performance of polymers
• Introduction to advanced materials: composites and foams

The laboratory session will include the following topics:
• Uniaxial mechanical testing
• Heat treatments and hardness testing (Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell) & Charpy impact testing
• Metallography

The labs will be carried out with reference to current School Health and Safety protocols. Students should follow these during all laboratory activities. Further information is available at https://intranet.ucd.ie/smme/index.html and within the Brightspace resources for this module.

The EDI principle will be applied in teaching & learning for a variety of activities including data sharing, lecture slides preparation, teamwork and assessment.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

What will I learn?
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts in materials science and engineering: structure, structural and functional properties, and the interaction of structure and properties.

2. Evaluate the mechanical behaviour of a material and analyse its microstructure.

3. Describe the relationships between materials processing, the resulting structure, and final properties.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module combines laboratory-based teaching with classroom-based teaching. It contains systematic illustrations in the format of videos and pictures in the lecture slide to explain the basic concept and advanced solutions. The student will have the practical labs to carry out the experiments to further enhance the learning from classroom teaching.
