MEEN20050 Heat Transfer

Academic Year 2023/2024

The module give an introduction to heat transfer with a focus on conduction and convection. It builds upon aspects of Stage 1 MEEN10050 Energy Engineering. Radiative heat transfer is not considered in the current module, instead it is treated later in MEEN40010 Thermodynamics III.

The indicative syllabus is as outlined below.

Revision of the fundamentals of heat transfer including applications involving conduction and convection.

Conduction: Conduction Equation. 1-D steady state conduction in plane walls and cylinders. Thermal resistance, thermal resistance networks, U-values, the composite wall and cylinder. Fin heat transfer.

Heat Exchangers: Types of heat exchanger, U value and resistance analysis. Log-mean temperature difference method. NTU-effectiveness method.

Convection: Forced convection. External convection. Internal convection. Free convection

Laboratories: Fin Analysis and Heat Exchanger Analysis.

All laboratory activities are carried out with due regard to the School's Health and Safety protocols. Students should follow these during all laboratory activities, including wearing a laboratory coat, and relevant PPE when required. Further information is available at https://intranet.ucd.ie/smme/index.html and within the Brightspace resources for this module.

During laboratory activities students will work in small teams to complete defined experimental activities where teamwork and collaboration is paramount.

Student are encouraged to make reference to the course text: Heat and Mass Transfer. Y.A. Cengel. McGraw Hill. Any edition should suffice, the current edition details are as follows: Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications
6th Edition, By Yunus Cengel and Afshin Ghajar, ISBN10: 0073398195, ISBN13: 9780073398198, (2020).

Supplementary Reading: Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer: Incropera F.P. and DeWitt, D.P. Prentice Hall. Any edition.

Students should note the UCD Alternative Linear Conversion Grade Scale is used for this module. For further details see:

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of heat transfer by applying the equations governing steady state heat conduction, convection and radiation to thermal problems.
2. Be able to solve 1-dimensional, steady state heat transfer problems involving convection and conduction through composite walls and pipes.
3. Analyse finned surfaces used to augment convection heat transfer.
4. Utilise experimental correlations in the analysis of convection heat transfer problems.
5. Analyse heat exchanger performance.
6. Understand the role of heat transfer in engineering applications.
