On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts in Materials Science & Engineering: structure, structural and functional properties, and the interaction of structure and properties
2. Evaluate the mechanical behaviour of a material, and analyze its microstructure
3. Describe the relationships between structure and properties
Content of lectures will include:
• Brief description of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)
• Atomic Structure and Interatomic Bonding
• Brief introduction to crystallography
• Imperfection in solid
• Diffusion
• Mechanical properties of metals
• Dislocations and Strengthening
• Phase diagrams
