MEEN2004W Materials 1

Academic Year 2022/2023

Materials 1 is an entry-level material module that will cover basic principles of atomic and interatomic bonding, crystallography, and imperfection in solids and diffusion. This module will discuss the fundamentals of the mechanical properties of metals and their dislocation and strengthening mechanisms. It also covers the basic material failure modes and gives a brief introduction to phase diagrams.

The module will have laboratories of metallurgy and mechanical characterization, which are carried out with reference to current School Health and Safety protocols. Students should follow these during all laboratory activities. Further information is available at https://intranet.ucd.ie/smme/index.html and within the Brightspace resources for this module.

The EDI principle will be applied in teaching & learning for a variety of activities including data sharing, lecture slides preparation, teamwork and assessment. The group assignment will be made available to teams with options of self-enrolment and automatic allocation. Groups are free to choose their assignment topic under defined guidelines. Team communication will be guided via Brightspace and in-person discussion.
