Dynamics is a branch of mechanics dealing with the motion of bodies under the action of forces. It has two distinct parts: "kinematics" which is the study of motion without reference to the forces causing the motion, and "kinetics", which relates the action of forces on bodies to their resulting motion. A thorough comprehension of dynamics provides one of the most useful and powerful tools for analysis in engineering.

Applied Dynamics I will focus on the following topics: - Particle Kinematics - Plane Kinematics of Rigid Bodies - Plane Kinetics of Rigid Bodies - Work-energy of Rigid Bodies - Impulse and Momentum. Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
i. Visualize physical configurations and thereby construct simplified three-dimensional sketches and meaningful mathematical models in terms of real materials, actual constraints, and the practical limitations which govern the behavior of machines and structures.
ii. Explain concepts of rigid body kinematics and kinetics.
iii. Use Newton's laws to express and solve problems in the dynamics of particles and rigid bodies.
iv. Analyze and interpret laboratory measurements of dynamics experiments.
v. Demonstrate an awareness of safe laboratory practice in the use of a range of laboratory equipment.
vi. Work effectively as a member of a team/group in the collection, analysis, presentation, and reporting of engineering information, while adhering to standard conventions for technical reporting but using diverse forms of communication.
vii. Gain experience in the use of computational methods for modeling advanced dynamic problems.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module students will be asked to:
- Participate in lectures by jointly working on problems
- Students will be provided a group project and an individual project that will require them to apply the class material to practical engineering challenges.
- The students will be required to stay up to date with the material throughout the trimester through two midterm examinations and a final exam.
