MEDN40060 Clinical Skills RUMC

Introduction to the basic clinical skills of history taking and physical examination for RUMC stage 4 medical students. The module consists of lectures designed principally to orientate students towards the clinical skills workshops where the skills will be learnt and practised. Communication skills are emphasised through interaction with simulated patients and patient educators.

Learning Outcomes:

Appropriate professional approach to patients.Efficient eliciting and recording of symptoms and medical history.Basic competence in physical examination of the major systems.Basic competence in specified clinical procedures including sphygmomanometry and basic life support including application of AED.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The main emphasis is on active and task based learning where the student learns by demonstration and then supervised practice. Lectures are used in conjunction to provide information in preparation for the workshops.
Some peer review of communication skills occurs in videotaped sessions

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

In our clinical skills workshops we incorporate feedback into student practice examination sessions and also do videotaped history taking sessions used for formative feedback in a small group setting . The purpose of our feedback is to prepare you for the end of module OSCE examining communication and physical examination skills.
