By the end of this module you must be able to:
Recognise, manage and treat common illnesses.
Interpret common diagnostic tests.
Review drug charts and prescriptions and identify errors, deviations or omissions therein.
Write safe and legal prescriptions in various formats.
Understand how medicines are administered.
Know how to look up relevant content in the British National Formulary.
Appreciate medication safety issues.
Understand the need to practice medicine in an evidence-based manner.
Lecture topics include:
Evidence-based medicine; clinical trials, prescribing skills, diagnostic interpretation, review of therapeutics for common illnesses (eg stroke, diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, pneumonia, pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, depression, anxiety, palliative care)
Seminar topics include:
Cancer radiotherapy
CALs in weeks 5-8 focus on prescribing scenarios.
Students complete drug chart assignments while on clinical placement.

Automated feedback on prescribing CALs in weeks 5-8 is built into these tutorials. After completing the CALs with supervision and assistance, the students later have the ability to self-assess in their own time. Mock MCQ quiz will be made available to students in week 9 to help prepare students for exit MCQ. Group/class feedback on drug chart assignments will be made available at the end of this module to highlight common errors/pitfalls in completing these tasks.
