The elective module is designed to allow students in the final year of their medical degree to pursue additional training in areas of interest to them and to improve on previously learned skills. It is a 6 week module that is scheduled for the first 6 weeks of Spring in the final year of the medical degree. The student may choose between one 6 week or two 3-4 week electives in approved institutions; in the case of the latter the electives may occur at the same or different institutions. In exceptional circumstances students may receive credit for a 2 week elective - however this will require pre-approval by the module co-ordinator and will be determined on an individual basis. All students will be required to complete a minimum of 6 weeks.
The elective(s) may occur in a clinical or non-clinical discipline. It must be of educational value. Following negotiation with their mentor the student will be required to identify goals against which the student's performance will be measured upon completion of the module. Achievement of the stated goals and attendance for the requisite amount of time will be required for successful completion of the module. Students may complete some or all of the module requirements during the summer immediately prior to their final year.
Learning activities will vary according to the discipline the students choose for their elective. It is expected that these will include one-on-one teaching by the mentor or those that he/she designates such as team members, research assistants etc., directed and self-directed learning, patient interaction and other practical experiences, as appropriate.
Assessment occurs through continuous assessment, negotiated learning contract and reflective portfolio designed to document knowledge gained through the elective. The module is grade point neutral and students will be awarded a pass or fail grade. Those who fail will not be awarded any credits and hence will need to repeat the module in order to be eligible to graduate.
