Module Structure

The module comprises a Sub-internship Programme and two weeks of Clinical Instruction. The module also includes a Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA) which is a mandatory exam for all students and will be held normally in March.

Sub-internship

In the sub-internship section of the module the class will be split into three groups. You will have been allocated to one of these groups (A, B or C). Each group will rotate through three programmes. A detailed schedule for each group will be posted on Brightspace. The programmes are as follows:

Programme 1: Intern Shadowing

During this programme you will be attached to two interns over 3 weeks in St. Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. A list of the names and bleep numbers of the interns that you will be attached to will be displayed on Brightspace prior to the beginning of the module. You are advised to contact the intern the Friday prior to your attachment to make arrangements for when and where to meet on the first Monday of your shadowing.
You are expected to shadow the intern, visualise yourself as a working doctor and become intricately involved in the working day of the intern. Please note that a major goal of the intern shadowing is to allow you to gain experience in the core clinical procedures listed in your logbook. You should participate in all scheduled educational activities for the team, including Journal Club and Grand Rounds. You must ask your interns to complete the relevant feedback forms and, once complete, forward them to the Module Administrator in the envelope provided. You must satisfactorily complete Intern Shadowing before sitting the end of module assessment.
Please note that attendance is mandatory and you will not fulfil the module requirements until the intern shadowing is completed.
Programme 2: Practical Issues for Interns and Clinical Procedures

This three-week course offers a variety of interactive, practical sessions on aspects of work as a junior doctor. These include an introduction to the workings of important hospital departments. You will be instructed in medical, surgical, legal and psychiatric issues for interns, care in medicine, basic life support (an accredited course) and manual handling.

Programme 3: Self-Directed Learning

During Self-Directed Learning you will have the opportunity to revise important theory taught in previous modules in preparation for the ‘Clinical Instruction’ section of the module and the subsequent end-of-module assessment. We have prepared a list of topics to act as a guide to your revision. We must stress that this list is a guide, does not constitute a syllabus, and the questions you may be asked as part of your end-of-module assessment may not be directly drawn from this list of topics.

Clinical Instruction

In the final 2 weeks of the programme we will have a series of revision lectures on various topics in medicine. The schedule will be available on Brightspace.

Assessment Week

At the end of the module the students will be examined by means of a Viva and a Long Case Assessment. Given that the Long Case Assessment is a must pass component they will be offered a “Second Chance” long Case on the Friday of the exam week.

An in-module resit will be offered to students who fail the module. This in module - resit will normally be within a few days of the end of the module in order to meet the required deadlines for the University Examination Board and in advance of HSE deadlines for Internship allocations.
