Students are instructed on how to obtain a comprehensive history, perform a complete physical examination, generate a list of possible diagnoses, formulate a plan of management, develop case presentation skills and communicate with patients. The learning environment will include the UCD Clinical Skills Centre where workshops will take place and clinical sites in UCD affiliated hospitals. Students will learn how to obtain a history, perform a complete examination, and generate differential diagnoses through small group teaching by means of workshops, which includes student role-play and the use of simulator manikins, use of video-recording sessions, small group tutorials and interaction with patients in the clinical settings and case presentations. Basic CPR and procedural skills will be taught and the students will have the opportunity to practise these skills using manekins. Students will also learn how to integrate their clinical findings into assessments of patients and present the information in an organized and concise manner. Students are required to attend all of the scheduled clinical activities for this module.
As part of a new formative assessment students are required to submit 4 case write-ups of patients whom they have assessed on their clinical attachements for which they will receive feedback from consultants/tutors in order to improve their presentation skills.

Professionalism is integral to and will be assessed throughout the module. Any behavior which is considered to be in breach of professional behavior will be formally noted. This forms part of the ‘must pass’ component of the assessment.
Any behaviour which is considered to be in breach of professional behaviour as set out in the School's Statement on Fitness to Practice (in addition to the University's policy) will be formally noted.
Recording of lectures and tutorials on clinical sites is not permitted. If a student has special dispensation and is registered with DSS and additional supports are required, the student should contact module co-ordinator in advance of module commencement.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Obtain a comprehensive history from a patient; 2. Perform a basic physical examination; 3. Demonstrate competency in basic procedural skills; 4. Recognise abnormal findings; 5. List differential diagnoses for patients' problems; 6. Communicate with patients in a professional and empathetic manner; 7. Present information in a concise and organized manner.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Active learning with small group teaching of clinical skills in the Clinical Skills Centre in UCD followed by practical teaching/learning in real case scenarios in the teaching hospitals.

Learning Requirements:

Completion of Systems 1 course of the GEM MB, BCh, BAO programme.

For patient safety reasons, registration to this module is conditional and at the Governing Board’s discretion. Therefore, registration is subject to the successful completion of Stage 1, and the following Stage 2 modules;

Results of the OSCE assessment of examination skills are provisionally made available to student post this assessment prior to the final clinical examination for the module. The co-ordinator provides individual feedback to students as needed.
