The module is delivered in Stage 2 of the graduate-entry degree programme. This 5-credit module forms part of the Clinical 1 curriculum, i.e., the transition between Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Sciences. The module is informed by the Irish Medical Council's Eight Domains of Good Professional Practice:

Aims: To support students knowledge and skills acquisition in history taking, clinical skills, differential diagnosis, biopsychosocial model of health and illness and professional aspects of clinical practice.

Specific objectives include:
To demonstrate what constitutes good professional practice, and what this means in real-world clinical practice
To help students appreciate how different elements of the healthcare system should best collaborate to optimise patient outcomes
To provide students with an opportunity to practice history taking communication skills
To provide students with an introduction to the fundamental principles and key concepts of palliative care.
Full attendance during the module is expected. Absences must be approved by the module coordinator who may require supporting documentation (e.g., medical certificates, evidence of healthcare appointments, etc). Attendance at core teaching sessions (e.g., lectures, workshops) is mandatory.

Your participation on the module will be monitored. Satisfactory attendance and participation are necessary to pass the module. Please note that professionalism is integral to this module and will be assessed throughout the module. Any behaviour which is considered to be in breach of professional standards as set out in the School's Statement on Fitness to Practice will be formally addressed.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the eight domains of good professional practice and attitudes and behaviours that are consistent with professional practice.
- Appreciate how different elements of the healthcare system should best collaborate to optimise patient outcomes.
- Recognise core clinical skills for patient-centered clinical consultation and demonstrate history taking communication skills.
