The module is delivered in Stage 4B of the MB degree programme. This 5-credit module forms part of the Clinical 1 curriculum, i.e., the transition between Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Sciences. The module is informed by the Irish Medical Council’s Eight Domains of Good Professional Practice:
● Patient Safety & Quality of Patient Care
● Relating to Patients
● Communication and Interpersonal Skills
● Collaboration and Teamwork
● Management (including Self-Management)
● Scholarship
● Professionalism
● Clinical Skills

It contains:
● Clinical placement in general practice (subject to prevailing Public Health recommendations)
● Interactive seminars / small group tutorials
● Lectures

Aims: To support students’ knowledge and skills acquisition in history taking, clinical skills, biopsychosocial model of health and illness and professional aspects of clinical practice.

Specific objectives include:
● To understand what constitutes good professional practice, and what this means in real-world clinical practice
● To help students appreciate how different elements of the healthcare system should best collaborate to optimise patient outcomes
● To provide students with an opportunity to practice history taking / clinical skills

Full attendance during the module is expected. Absences must be approved by the module coordinator who may require supporting documentation (e.g., medical certificates, evidence of healthcare appointments, etc). Attendance at core teaching sessions (e.g., lectures, tutorials, seminars) is mandatory. Your participation on the module will be monitored. Satisfactory attendance and participation are necessary to pass the module.
