The purpose of the module is to inform the student on the many ways in which recent discoveries and topical issues in science and medicine impact on our individual lives and on society. The nature of the subject matter requires that a broad range of diverse topics be included and it is the introduction of the student to this diversity that forms the objective of the module. The subjects chosen for study are representative of those which impinge on our daily lives and about which a student aspiring to be a practicing physician or an honours graduate in Biomedical, Health and Life Sciences might be expected to have an informed view.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In approaching the design of this curriculum design combines emphasis on the students learning key threshold concepts in the areas of Health Professionals and Caring; in learning the Importance of Research and Major Healthcare Issues in Society which will facilitate students understanding their discipline and their future profession, from a broad range of perspectives.The essay/project is often a cross-cutting theme and allows the students to make connections between different elements of the curriculum through integrative learning and also working as a team for the group essay/project where they write the essay in groups of 4 (or 5) to enhance their learning and also to facilitate working in teams.
There is also a self-assessment and group assessment component to the essay/project work.

Self-assessment Activity: This module uses WebPA as a Self-assessment activity: Web PA assessment activity facilitates students to self-monitor and critically evaluate their own work so Self-Assessment as well as part of the submitting of their work - the Group Essay or Project which they do in Groups of 4 (or 5) Peer review activities - Group -Assessment - WebPA is used as part of the Group Assessing each other for their collaborative part of their work for the Group Essay or Project which they do in Groups of 4 (or 5). This facilitates group work together meeting in groups and also online, where they have opportunities to discuss how they assign work and deliver, manage deadlines, how they work as a team, how they work with other students against descriptive criteria etc.
