MDCS42680 Mental Health: young people

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module delivers teaching on Child and Adolescent Mental Health disorders. Teaching is provided on the
clinical presentation and treatment of disorders in young people including depression, anxiety disorders and eating
disorders in children. There will be some teaching on deliberate self harm in children and personality development.
Developmental disorders including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders and
learning disorders will be covered in the teaching. Behavioural disorders and substance misuse disorders will also
be covered. There will be a focus on initial recognition of the disorders and safe initial management of mental
health disorders in young people.
This module is delivered during the first year of a 4-year programme on Child Art Psychotherapy, and is available
as an elective module to other students every second year - ie in academic year 2021/2022, academic year
2023/2024, academic year 2025/2026.
100% attendance is expected, but 80% attendance is the minimum attendance required to achieve credit for the
module. Absences must be discussed with the module coordinator or course lecturers, who will require supporting
documentation (e.g. medical certificates). Students who miss part of the module may be asked to do a further piece
of work in remediation.
