MDCS42360 Stage2 Trans Research Skills A

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is for graduate research students in the School of Medicine who have completed one year of registration. Topics covered include communication skills both oral and written with emphasis on communicating with expert and non expert peers and writing of scientific papers. Students will enhance their critical analysis and thinking skills through participation at journal clubs and at research seminars and will start to reflect on their own scientific identity and how this evolves with experience.

Learning Outcomes:

After successful completion of this module students will be able to
Critically evaluate their own work and that of their peers
Confidently present their research orally to peers and to faculty
Receive feedback and reflect on it
Understand the importance of integrity and ethics in research
Understand the value of interdisciplinary translational research
Know the potential impact of their research

Indicative Module Content:

Students will attend interactive workshops on scientific communication with an emphasis on how to write a scientific paper.
They will participate in scientific journal clubs .
They will present their work at a research seminar and receive feedback from members of faculty
The will reflect on their learning and development of their scientific identity through an online discussion board with peers.
