This module is for graduate research degree students in the School of Medicine. PhD students should bein Stage 1 of the programme. The module is designed to enable research students in the School of Medicine to learn how to integrate the scientific and translational aspects of their research, to learn how to critically assess the current literature and discuss it with their peers and develop their critical thinking skills. Students will also learn how to develop their scientific communication and presentation skills. Students will also learn how to reflect on their development as researchers as they move through their programme.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: demonstrate a familiarity with the clinical relevance of their research, critically evaluate work described in research papers, consider the impact of current developments on their own research area and write a scientific abstract.

Indicative Module Content:

This module will inform students of the requirements of the PhD programme in the UCD School of Medicine. Students will learn about other research that is ongoing in the School. Communication workshops will focus on how to write an abstract for both scientific and lay audiences and explain the importance of abstracts and their potential impact. Students will learn about research that their peers in the School are doing and the methods that they are using and will reflect on how their own research could be improved by collaborating with others. Students will attend journal clubs and learn how to review a scientific paper and discuss it's merits and limitations. They will learn about the importance of integrity and ethics in research. Throughout the module students will contribute to a discussion board on how their communication and critical thinking skills are developing.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will attend interactive workshops where they will contribute to discussions and ask questions. They will review one anothers writing and give peer feedback. They will attend and participate in research seminars and journal clubs. They will work in groups to reflect on and discuss their learning throughout the module.

Students registering for this module need to be registered for a graduate research degree in the School of Medicine, PhD students must be in Stage 1 of the doctoral programme.
