Access to this module is limited to nominees of the statutory health services. Trauma sometimes involves complex situations and more than one patient and can be complicated by underlying medical conditions.

This module equips the candidate to deal with the assessment and management of trauma to the standards required of a Registered Advanced Paramedic. It also introduces complex situations including environmental conditions, self -harm, special patient populations and the legal and ethical considerations involved. Candidates will relate this knowledge to the implementation of all relevant CPGs. Candidates will complete a taught course, clinical placements and skills teaching sessions.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, candidates will demonstrate knowledge, understanding and competence in:

• primary and secondary trauma assessments
• the anatomical and physiological underpinnings of trauma and its management
• using appropriate adjuncts
• specific trauma patterns and presentations
• special trauma circumstances (e.g. the elderly, environmental issues)
• incorporating the care of underlying or intercurrent medical conditions
