Access to this module is limited to nominees of the statutory health services. This module equips the candidate to deal with the assessment and management of situations to the standards required of a Registered Advanced Paramedic. Key topics in this module include initial patient assessment, examination skills, critical decision making and immediate life-saving interventions.
This module builds on knowledge, skills and experience gained at paramedic level regarding acute illness, chronic conditions and exacerbations of chronic illness.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, candidates will be able to take a comprehensive patient history, perform a focused clinical examination and complete a primary and secondary survey with relevant interventions (PHECC Clinical Practice Guidelines).

Candidates will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the causes, presentation and management of common emergencies: cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, abdominal disorders, endocrine disorders, allergic conditions, infectious disease and neurological problems. The candidate will also be competent in advanced life support.

Core skills include: - comprehensive patient assessment
- advanced airway interventions
- intravenous and interosseous access
- selection and administration of appropriate therapeutic interventions

Candidates will complete a taught course, clinical placements and skills teaching sessions.
