Access to this module is limited to nominees of the statutory health services. This module equips the candidate to deal with the assessment and management of situations to the standards required of a Registered Advanced Paramedic. Advanced Paramedics are required to make decisions on the administration or impact of a wide range of drugs in emergency situations. This module introduces basic concepts of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and the medications included in the PHECC formulary.
Introduces the wide range of drugs administered and encountered by Advanced Paramedics and the protocols and guidelines relating to medication administration.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, candidates will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
1) the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
2) definitions of common terms in use in relation to drug administration
3) characteristics of common categories of drugs in use in the community
4) routes of medication administration
5) adverse reactions associated with prescription and non-prescription drugs
6) the characteristics of all drugs administered by APs including indications, contraindications, mechanism of action and side-effects
7) PHECC CPGs in which drug administration decisions are possible
8) protocols for the administration of drugs by available routes, with special regard to patient and practitioner safety
9) records and monitoring procedures for use in association with drug administration
