Students attend the weekly psychiatric case conference in St. Vincent’s University Hospital hosted by the SVUH Department of Psychiatry. A psychoanalytic perspective is also contributed to the meeting by the Programme Director, when appropriate. There is 80% mandatory attendance. No content from the Psychiatric Case Conference may be represented outside the meeting.

A weekly seminar is the other component of this module. It reads material from the psychoanalytic field in order to identify what is distinctive about psychoanalytic practice.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:
1) Have attended a minimum of 80% of the year of Psychiatric Case Conferences
2) Based on review of the psychiatric diagnostic manuals be able to demonstrate understanding of the main axes of psychiatric diagnostics
3) Be able to demonstrate appreciation of the objectives of psychiatric intervention
4) Begin to articulate how the psychiatric and psychoanalytic discourses might work productively alongside each other

Learning Requirements:

a knowledge of psychoanalysis acquired either at postgraduate level or as informed by professional clinical experience (including personal analysis) and/or other prior learning
