MDCS40390 Clinical Diagnostics and Research Part I

Academic Year 2023/2024

Students will attend the weekly psychiatric case conference held at St Vincent's University Hospital where regularly a patient interview takes place in the presence of mental health professionals and trainees. The interview, the psychiatric diagnosis, including the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic opinion, and the treatment plan inform the seminar immediately following. If there is not an interview there is a presentation of clinical material relevant to understanding psychiatric practice.

In addition the seminar reads key material from the teaching and writing of Jacques Lacan in order to identify what is distinctive about psychoanalytic practice. Students will benefit from this encounter between the psychiatric and psychoanalytic positions and develop an appreciation of the potential for collaboration between these different practices.

This is a must-pass module for the programme. In other words, a student cannot complete the MSc without passing this module regardless of grades across all other modules.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:1)Demonstrate understanding of the psychiatric diagnostics 2) Demonstrate understanding of a psychoanalytic formulation in relation to the patients presented 3)Evaluate the potential of a psychoanalytic formulation for the management of the care of individual patients attending the mental health services 4)Become proficient at writing up case presentation reports which include a psychoanalytic formulation.

a knowledge of psychoanalysis acquired either at postgraduate level or as informed by professional clinical experience (including personal analysis) and/or other prior learning
