MDCS40240 Development of Pictorial Thinking

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is part of the Professional Masters in Child Art Psychotherapy. The module is delivered in Year 1. It
focuses on the development of theories of pictorial thinking through an exploration of the use of images to express
and understand inner mental and emotional states in pictorial form. It includes a series of lectures on the
contributions to pictorial thinking by 20th Century artists and art writers and examines the interaction between art
and psychoanalysis.
100% attendance is expected, but 80% attendance is the minimum attendance required to achieve credit for the
module. Absences must be discussed with the module coordinator or course lecturers, who will require supporting
documentation (e.g. medical certificates). Students who miss part of the module may be asked to do a further piece
of work in remediation.
