The module highlights different perspectives on the therapeutic relationship among the practices presented in MDCS30010, including the challenges that arise in working with children and the elderly as well as in psychiatry. The notion of the therapeutic alliance and contract are covered along with the ethical implications of these arrangements. The psychoanalytic principles of transference and interpretation are also presented in so far as they challenge many assumptions about the therapeutic relationship.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding of different perspectives on the therapeutic relationship 2. Demonstrate an awareness of the principles of transference and interpretation;3. Recognise the complexities and limits of the therapeutic relationship; 4. Demonstrate awareness of the ethical direction of psychotherapeutic treatments in terms of suggestion and power
