The skin is the largest organ in the body and consumers are turning to the personal grooming sector for the solutions on how to care for their skin and scalp. There is an increased demand for knowledge in the areas of advanced skin care treatments and hair loss. This course will give hairdressers, barbers, therapists and beauty professionals more advanced knowledge, confidence and a deeper understanding of skin and hair science.

This webinar-based, interactive lecture series with fact-based assessment will comprise of approx. 25 hours of teaching covering a fundamental and comprehensive knowledge base of skin and hair follicle biological sciences.
The two lecture blocks will cover introduction to the biology of a) skin and b) its appendages (i.e. hair, nail), and where relevant, will include variations with gender, age, geographic ancestry etc.
It will not focus specifically on overt clinical pathology of the skin but will refer to common mild physiological changes (e.g., male pattern baldness, dry skin, oily skin) be of interest to the personal care market.
It will include a brief description of common skin and hair follicle disorders that clients may present with, and which may first be detected by grooming sector workers (incl. pigmentary lesions). In this way clients can be alerted to and encouraged to seek early medical attention from their GPs.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this Certificate, learners will be able to:

• Understand broad concepts of skin and hair biological science.
• Understand the normal presentation of our skin and scalp hair.
• Understand common abnormalities affecting skin and scalp hair.
• Understand the regenerative/wound-healing capacity of skin and hair follicles.
• Know the pathways for referral recommendations to medical professionals for skin and scalp hair conditions.
• Know how the hair fiber is formed and its structure etc.
• Know how skin cells are formed and the impact of age, gender and geographic ancestry.
• Understand the impact of chemical exposure (including product interface with skin and hair).
• Understand the impact of diet, wellbeing and environmental factors on the skin and hair.
• Understand the psychosocial impact of skin and hair-associated issues.

Indicative Module Content:

This webinar-based, interactive lecture series with fact-based assessment will comprise of approx. 25 hours of teaching, covering a fundamental and comprehensive knowledge base of skin and hair follicle biological sciences.

● Skin Interaction with Light (UVR & visible light incl. blue light)
● Skin Health & Nutrition (incl. nutraceuticals)
● The Human Scalp Hair Follicle & Hair Fiber
● Hair Growth Cycle
● Nutrition (incl. nutraceuticals)
● Hair Growth in Health, and Common Physiological Variants (thinning)
● Skin Health and Common Physiological Variants (dry/oil/sensitive skin)
● Skin Pigmentation (in health & mild physiological variants)
● Hair Follicle Immune System
● Hair Pigmentation
● Skin Aging
● Hair Follicle Aging (incl. hair graying)
● Hair Follicle Interaction with Light (UVR & visible light incl. blue light)
● Skin Stem Cells

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
• Students will be taught utilizing universal design of instruction including videos/podcasts, articles, worksheets, lectures, Q&As,
as well as multiple forms of assessment both for and of learning such as reflections
• Webinars will be interactive, allowing students to actively engage with the lecturer and facilitating discussion by the participants
with an expert in the field of skin and hair follicle science. The course puts assessment at the centre of learning by
incorporating an applied understanding of the topics including via problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based
personal (non-medical) care
• Robust online Case-based format assessment
• Students will gain experience in learning which they can carry forward in their careers for personal continued career
development or applying to continue their education.
