1. Complex numbers: Algebra of complex numbers, modulus and argument, polar form, complex roots of real polynomials occur in complex conjugate pairs, exponential with complex argument, Euler's formulae for elementary trigonometric function. 2. Systems of linear equations. 3. Matrices and determinants: Addition and multiplication of matrices, rank of a matrix, inverse of a matrix, determinants by row and column methods. 4. Eigenstructure: Eigenvalues and eigenvectors; linear independence; diagonalisation of a matrix 5. Vectors and three-dimensional geometry; Vectors in three-dimensional space, scalar/dot and vector/cross product, lines and planes in three-dimensional space. 6. Vector spaces

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successfully completing this module a student will be able to:a) Calculate with complex numbers, solve polynomial equations involving complex numbers. b) Solve systems of linear equations by echelon techniques. c) Find the inverse and rank of a matrix. d) Compute determinants. e) Find eigenvalues and eigenvectors. f) Compute scalar and vector products. Find equations of lines and planes using vector methods. g) Diagonalise matrices.
