Curricular information is subject to change.

This course examines a broad range of topics relating to minority languages including the assessment of language vitality, language documentation, language rights, language policies, language in education, language attitudes, language shift, and language revitalisation. The broader context is that in which there is general acceptance that more than half of the 6,900 or so languages that exist are in danger of dying within a few generations. Thus the threat to linguistic diversity and the parallels between language endangerment and global species endangerment are also examined.
