LING40050 Phonology

Academic Year 2021/2022

The first part of this course focuses on phonetics, starting with articulatory phonetics and moving on to acoustic phonetics. Students are introduced to the instrumental analysis of speech, working on a number of small projects. The focus of this part of the course is on different varieties of English.
The second part of the course focuses on the patterning of speech sounds in language exploring a range of cross-linguistic data.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
-describe, classify and transcribe speech sounds
-analyse recorded and transcribed speech, interpret data and process results
-interpret acoustic data from theoretical perspectives
-identify patterns in speech data and analyse them within particular theoretical frameworks
-demonstrate an understanding of current issues in phonological theory
