This module introduces the key topics and approaches in forensic phonetics using real-world cases and latest research findings. It covers several key topics in forensic phonetics, including speaker profiling, earwitness, speaker comparison, authentication, transcription and Language Analysis in the Asylum Procedure (LAAP). Particularly, the module discusses forensic phonetics in both monolingual contexts (e.g. English/German) and multilingual contexts (e.g. an Irish-English bilingual society).

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- gain a good overall understanding of forensic phonetics
- conduct phonetic analysis on different forensic-related tasks, e.g. transcription, earwitness design, speaker comparison
- think critically about speech evidence from forensic linguistics perspectives
- present forensic reports professionally

Indicative Module Content:

-Speaker profiling
-Speaker comparison (audio-phonetic approach and Automatic Speaker Recognition system)
-Earwitness evidence
-Authentication, enhancement and speech content determination
-Language Analysis in the asylum procedure (LAAP)
