In the first part of this module students review the principles of acoustic phonetics and the instrumental analysis of speech. They complete an analysis of recorded speech focusing on specific variables. The second part of the module focuses on segmental and prosodic phonology. It examines the mechanisms required to capture the nature of lexical representations and phonological patterning, and explores the universality of phonological structures and typological variation across languages. The module provides a critical evaluation of existing theories on the basis of empirical evidence and the formal mechanisms they implement. This module forms part of the BA programme for Linguistics.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
-Analyse transcribed speech and represent phonological patterning using formal tools
-Analyse and interpret acoustic speech signals
-Construct models to illustrate phonological knowledge
-Evaluate competing formal representations and identify the implications of contrasting approaches

Phonetic variation: analysis of variation within varieties of one language
Phonological variation: phonological structure/representations, including segmental representations, sonority, syllable structure, metrical structure
