This module examines the sound patterns in words and phrases. It is concerned with, for example, the distribution of sounds in individual languages, the sound combinations allowed and the 'repair' strategies adopted to deal with disallowed sound combinations, and the acoustic realisation of segmental and suprasegmental features. It also connects phonetics and phonology knowledge and real-world implications such as language teaching and forensic linguistics. Students are introduced to the acoustic analysis of speech and complete a project examining an aspect of their own speech. This module forms part of the BA programme for Linguistics.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this module students should be able to:
- perform an acoustic analysis of recorded speech
- classify natural classes of sounds
- identify and describe the patterning of these classes in languages
- understand how research in phonetics and phonology is conducted
- use theories of second language speech acquisition to predict L2 learning difficulties
- apply knowledge of phonetics and phonology to language teaching and forensic cases
