This module introduces the area of Linguistics that involves sounds in language and focuses on (1) Phonetics - the description and classification of the sounds found in human languages, and (2) Phonology - the related area that deals with the structure of sound systems in languages, i.e. the distribution, patterning and interaction of sounds in natural (human) language. Data from a number of language, starting with English, are analysed and cross-linguistic generalisations are established. The acquisition of the sound system (child phonology) is also explored.
