This module examines the law and practice around data protection governance. It examines the procedural rules and safeguards which are in place to guarantee data protection rights, such as the role of data protection officers, the carrying out of data protection impact assessments, data breach responses including notification, handling of subject access requests, handling of requests for erasure, and so forth. It also introduces the core elements of information and data management, including the ethical issues these present.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to describe and apply in a practical manner the rules regarding the handling of the primary procedural obligations under the GDPR, including:

- Appointment and role of the data protection officer
- Subject access requests
- Data protection impact assessments
- Requests for erasure/rectification
- Objections to processing
- Data breach handling
- Recording and documenting of processing activities
- Prior consultation

Students will also be able to identify and discuss fundamental issues in data and information management, including the ethical issues these present.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will include a range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, group work and case studies. As far as possible it will include input from practitioners in the field. Particular use will be made of group work applying the issues involved to factual scenarios. Depending on student numbers, individual and/or group presentations will also be used.
